Pleasure Craft Courtesy Checks

If your vessel is in the Oakville area, here is an opportunity to have a TOWARF Boating Safety Specialist confirm your vessel is equipped to comply with safe boating laws, and it is FREE!

Transport Canada’s Office of Boating Safety, trains volunteers to provide Pleasure Craft Courtesy Checks in conjunction with the Canadian Coast Guard and Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary.  They are known as Boating Safety Specialists (BSS) and perform Courtesy Checks free of charge on privately owned vessels up to 20m in length.

A Pleasure Craft Courtesy Check (PCCC) is neither mandatory nor required by law. However, the law does require carriage of the prescribed safety equipment. A PCCC is not a test; you cannot fail it.

The objective is to ensure your vessel is compliant with safe boating laws and to promote safety awareness.  Once invited onto your vessel, in about 20 to 30 minutes, the BSS will go through a checklist of items to see if they are present and compliant with safe boating laws. Optional safety and navigation equipment is also checked. The BSS will answer any questions to help you remedy any deficiencies and address other concerns you may have.  The BSS has no enforcement function so if anything is found wanting, they will offer suggestions that can assist you in remedying the deficiencies.

The information obtained during a pleasure craft courtesy check will not be forwarded to any enforcement agency.

A courtesy check does help you ensure that you will not be found in violation of safe boating laws should you be pulled over by authorities on the water.  More importantly, it helps you avoid a situation where you are ill prepared for an unexpected emergency.

Upon successful completion of your PCCC, a decal will be issued by the BSS on behalf of Transport Canada.  The sticker should be displayed on the vessel.   Having a Pleasure Craft Courtesy Check shows that you are a responsible boater who cares for those on board your vessel.
